 DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Who needs to take the class?

All new drivers in Maryland must complete the standard driver education class. This course is required to obtain a Provisional Driver's License. If you already have a license from another country, you need the 3-hour Drug and Alcohol Program.

You must be at least 15 years old to attend the Driver's Education class. Students must have a valid Learner's Permit for the driving portion of the program, although the classroom portion is open to all students 15 and older.

Please note that we only offer this program in English. Students must pass written tests in order to complete the course.

What is included?

The class consists of 30 hours in the classroom and 6 hours behind the wheel.

How much does the class cost?

Blue Bird Driving School is currently running a special, offering the complete Driver's Ed program for $350. This special rate may not be available year-round.

We accept cash, check, money order, Visa, and Mastercard. Please make checks and money orders payable to Blue Bird Driving School, Inc.

How do I sign up for the class?

You can either call the office or email us to reserve a spot in an upcoming class. We also offer walk-in registrations if the class is not full. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before class starts on the first Monday of class.

Where are classes held?

We have a classroom in Greenbelt and Laurel. Please see our Locations & Calendar page for the address.

When are classes held?

Classes are Monday - Friday for two weeks. Please see our Locations & Calendar page for information on current class schedules. The six hours of driving appointments will be arranged after the student has completed the 30 classroom hours.

At Greenbelt, classes are 6:00 pm - 9:15 pm. Laurel is 5:45 pm - 9 pm. We are also holding morning classes from 9:00 am - 12:15 pm during the summer in both locations.

What do I need to bring?

On the first day of class, please bring your payment, your Learner's Permit, and a photocopy of your Learner's Permit. If you do not have a Learner's Permit, please bring a birth certificate, passport, state ID, or United States military ID. If you do not have access to a photocopier, we will make a copy of your Learner's Permit when you register.

Pencils are provided, but students who wish to take notes may want to bring pen and paper.

When will I drive?

The MVA requires driver education schools to afford all students who enroll in a driver education course the opportunity to complete the entire course (classroom and behind the wheel) within 18 weeks from the date of the first class. We are typically able to complete the behind-the-wheel sessions much earlier than this. Your classroom instructor can advise you concerning driving appointments. Otherwise, please contact the main office at 301-441-8100 for the approximate time between completion of the classroom hours and beginning of the driving hours. If you have already completed the 30 hours of classroom instruction, we will call you to set up your driving appointments.

We recommend that students hold their Learner's Permits for at least three months, and practice driving for at least 30 hours, before beginning the six hours behind the wheel. Although the focus is on instruction, the MVA also requires us to test students during this portion of the program, and those without driving experience may be unable to complete the required tasks with a passing score.

 AFTER THE PROGRAM

When do I get my certificate?

The MVA no longer issues paper certificates. After you complete both your 30 hours of class and 6 hours of driving, we submit your completion record to the MVA's online database. It can take up to 72 hours for the MVA to process.

When can I schedule my driving test at the MVA?

After you have completed
both your 30 hours of class and 6 hours of driving we will submit your electronic completion records to the MVA. Make sure your appointment is scheduled to take place at least 72 hours after the next business day. If you would like to confirm that your information was received by the MVA, you can call us at 301-441-8100 two business days after your last lesson.

Provisional license test appointments can be scheduled online through the MVA's website.
Click the box marked "I have read and understand the special instructions" to proceed. For more information, please visit our MVA Resources page.
